Its not related. The gnome package is a meta-package which intends to bring
all packages with it which are needed to provide the true GNOME experience™
(or at least what the maintainer chooses to be the experience).

This experience includes an ad-free web it seems [0] as gnome depends on the
xulrunner extension xul-ext-adblock-plus. xulrunner is the base of iceweasel
(the webbrowser) and icedove (and a few others I am not enumerating now),
but is in its current version incompatible with icedove 17 which means your
request to install icedove 17 causes the remove of xul-ext-adblock-plus and
as the gnome package depends on it also of the gnome package.

So from an APT point of view this is all correct and intended behavior.
What shouldn't happen is that in Debian stable the included versions of
icedove and xul-ext-adblock-plus are incompatible, but this isn't in the
realms of the APT development team to deal with, thats to be tackled by
the Debian Stable Release or Debian Security Team who put the ESR
versions of icedove into stable(/updates).

(For the bugreport itself, APT is getting better at it version by
version, but catching all cases is hard. And always remember:
If you don't like the solution, you can always press 'N'. ;) )

Best regards
