I've written up a performance characterization of apt-file(1) as stands. The preliminary version is available here: http://nick-black.com/raptorial-file I'd prefer you not show this around, as it's very preliminary, and all of these numbers drastically change with raptorial-file. I'd like any feedback people can provide regarding what appear to be broken regex searches in apt-file(1), though -- see the third para of the first section. Regarding raptorial-file(1), I'm expecting to have it done by tomorrow morning, as planned. I need address bug 705 first: https://www.sprezzatech.com/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=705 as without this, I don't beat apt-file(1) for typical searches on a multicore machine, and we effectively tie on a single-core. For atypical searches or multiple searches, I'm wasting apt-file(1) on both uni- and multicores already, but I'd rather win on the common case :). You can see a list of all Raptorial bugs here: https://www.sprezzatech.com/bugs/buglist.cgi?product=Raptorial I'll send around numbers for raptorial-file(1) as soon as I have them. I've been verifying at each step that performance of rapt-show-versions(1) is unaffected by the changes I'm making, but will include those as well, for completeness. Hack on! --rigorously, nick btw, if y'all feel it appropriate to make me a member of the APT team, please feel free to do so at your convenience. -- nick black http://www.sprezzatech.com -- unix and hpc consulting to make an apple pie from scratch, you need first invent a universe.
