Package: apt
Version: 0.9.3
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,

I'm trying to install wine:i386 in a multiarch environment, with the native
architecture being amd64. This fails because cups-bsd:i386 depends on
update-inetd and cups-common, which are Architecture: all:

$ LANG=C sudo apt-get install -t unstable wine:i386 libwine-print:i386 cups-bsd:i386 cups-client:i386
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 cups-bsd:i386 : Depends: update-inetd:i386 but it is not installable
                 Depends: cups-common:i386 but it is not installable
 cups-client:i386 : Depends: cups-common:i386 (>= 1.5.2) but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

cups-common and update-inetd are already installed on the system.

APT is unusable because you can't install one package?
That is a bold statement…
Please try to be a bit more conservative with severity in the future.

Both packages are Architecture all, yes, but both packages aren't
marked as Multi-Arch: foreign which would allow them to be used
in the context there a :i386 package would be needed.
(technical all arch:all packages are handled as if they would be arch:native)

So this is not a bug in APT, these packages just aren't converted to be
multi-architecture-ready yet.

The error message could be more helpful in that case, but that is difficult
to detect by a machine and we have a lot of bugreports about improving
this message already, so i will close this bug for now as no-bug.

Still, thanks for your report and best regards

David Kalnischkies
