Package: apt
Version: 0.7.25.3
Severity: normal

Hi,

upgrading the package git-svn fails without error message:

# apt-get install git-svn
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
git-svn is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 420 not upgraded.

The message "git-svn is already the newest version" is wrong as
1:1.7.0.4-1 is installed but -2 exists:

# apt-get install git-svn=1:1.7.0.4-2
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer
required:

So everything is as you have configured it:
Your preference file says that you want to have the most recent
testing version and if this fails the most recent unstable version.

In your case you are starting from version 1:1.7.0-1 with pin 100.
In the version list are no pins >1000, so no downgrades.
Looking only at the versions equal or greater the version with
the highest pinning is intended the version from testing -
and it is installed, so APT is right, the newest version you want
to consider as a candidate is installed.

In difference: If you would be at version 1:1.7.0.4-1 APT would suggest
you an upgrade to 1:1.7.0.4-2 as this is the version with the
highest pin (testing is not considered, so unstable is the new king).

So your preferences can be described as a user who want to use
testing but pulls in unstable packages from time to time he want
to be automatically updated from unstable again as long as the version
he has installed on his system hasn't migrated to testing.
After this has happened the package will again be only upgraded
to newer testing versions.

btw: In this setup lenny/updates is useless as it will never provide
you with a version which is higher than the versions in testing and
unstable - and even if it would it has a low pinning compared to the
others so it will be not the choosen candidate…

If you want a different behavior you need to describe it differently.
I highly recommend to (re)read the apt_preferences manpage in this
case - it is even available in german (and a few other languages) so
you have no excuse. ;) (i am guessing german from your LC setting)

I am also closing this bug now as it seems it is a misunderstanding,
but in case i misunderstand you feel free to reopen it again.

Best regards / Mit freundlichen Grüßen,

David Kalnischkies
