This is an apt issue. You can check it when you set LANG=C,
and LC_MESSAGES to your locale. Running apt-cache show PKG,
now shows exactly the same behaviour.

To fix this problem at least in your python programs for now,
use locale.setlocale(locale.LC_ALL, "it_IT.UTF-8") (although
this may not be a good idea depending on what you want to
do).

I am reassigning it to apt, in the version you used when you
reported the bug.
