Hi

I also face this issue. It happens only when running from cron,
gzip name is mangled several times during apt-ftparchive run:

[pid 27785] execve("/bin/gzgzg", ["n/gzgzg", "-d"], [/* 7 vars */]) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
[pid 27787] execve("/usr/bin/gzgzgr", ["n/gzgzgr\221", "-d"], [/* 7 vars */]) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
[pid 27787] execve("/bin/gzgzgr", ["n/gzgzgr\221", "-d"], [/* 7 vars */]) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
[pid 27789] execve("/usr/bin/gzgzg", ["n/gzgzg", "-d"], [/* 7 vars */]) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
[pid 27789] execve("/bin/gzgzg", ["n/gzgzg", "-d"], [/* 7 vars */]) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
[pid 27790] execve("/usr/bin/gzgzg", ["n/gzgzg", "-d"], [/* 7 vars */]) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
[pid 27790] execve("/bin/gzgzg", ["n/gzgzg", "-d"], [/* 7 vars */]) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
[pid 27791] execve("/usr/bin/gzgzg", ["n/gzgzg", "-d"], [/* 7 vars */]) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
[pid 27791] execve("/bin/gzgzg", ["n/gzgzg", "-d"], [/* 7 vars */]) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
[pid 27792] execve("/usr/bin/gzgzgnQ", ["n/gzgzgnQ", "-d"], [/* 7 vars */]) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
[pid 27792] execve("/bin/gzgzgnQ", ["n/gzgzgnQ", "-d"], [/* 7 vars */]) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)

It happens only when running from cron or if I set PATH=/usr/bin:/bin. I
have not investigated code, but when PATH have usual value (what happens
to be PATH=/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/games)
apt-ftparchive works fine here. Problem seems to be in too short PATH,
as changing to PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/dsfasdfdsafdsa/fdsaf/fdasf/dasfdasfdas
(the addded path obviously does not exist) "fixes" this issue.
