(making sure previously downloaded packages are not the problem:)

from now on, every operation attempted causes a segmentation fault as well.

the rest of the apt configuration files have not been touched from their
defaults.
i have checked that the packages file was intact - the md5 signature matched the
Release file, and the Release file was properly signed.
