Bug#343392: apt: --default-always option for apt-get?

Package: apt
Version: 0.6.42.1
Severity: wishlist

'apt-get --assume-yes upgrade' is too bold; for example, it
will replace your config files.

--trivial-only is too cautious: It exits with
E: Trivial Only specified but this is not a trivial operation

How about an intermediate option --default-always that is like hitting
return to get the default action. I suppose one could simulate its
effect with

  yes '' | apt-get upgrade

but that feels a bit risky. I worry that it might hang in unusual
situations that --default-always could get out of more safely.
