Jordi and I worked on this problem during the Ubuntu conference in Oxford,
and I have a fix in arch.  However, the Debian base system has been frozen
for some time, so I will likely not be uploading apt to Debian until after
the Sarge release.

(it will be fixed with my next upload to Ubuntu, though)
