I now have reason to believe that this problem was caused by my
imprudent efforts to use a memory module of an unsupported size in my
Apple Power Macintosh G3 ("blue&white").

Other bizarre things happened when the system was under heavy load (such
as compiling libX11).  Since removing the module the compile problems
have gone away as have my period apt-get segfaults.
