Bug#210706: apt: out of memory error while reading sid Packages file in woody

Package: apt
Version: 0.5.4
Severity: normal

If a line for the sid archive is added to /etc/apt/sources.list on a
woody system, after `apt-get update' the following error results

[...snip...]
Get:7 http://http.us.debian.org unstable/main Release [82B]
Get:8 http://http.us.debian.org unstable/contrib Packages [83.5kB]
Get:9 http://http.us.debian.org unstable/contrib Release [85B]

Reading Package Lists... Error!

E: Problem with MergeList
/var/lib/apt/lists/http.us.debian.org:80_debian_dists_unstable_main_binary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

Now I've seen this on a couple of systems with varying, but large,
amounts of RAM. So this looks like a bug. In particular this might
be important for those who wish to upgrad from woody directly to sid.

Note that above error doesn't occur of unstable is replaced by testing.

Hope this helps.

Igor
