Package: apt
Version: 0.5.3
Severity: wishlist

I suggest what I think is a very important feature.

I suggest the apt-get by default create a log in /var/lib/dpkg of every
message appearing when it runs. This would be very helpful when I
forget to run apt-get dselect-upgrade in an Emacs buffer to look at the
warnings printed by the various postinst scripts and similar sources.
Without this feature, I have no way to recover those messages once I run
apt-get on a different console than the one I work on.

There are already many ways to implement this, using tools such as script(1)
and (as you pointed out) emacs. I don't think there is significant value in
duplicating this functionality in apt.

As far as warnings being printed by packages, these should be done via
debconf now anyway, so you can have them sent by mail, etc.
