Affirmative: apt is 0.5.5 on both (present sid version).

Don't know if it matters, but on the machine where dselect _do_ work:
LANG=C (probably different on the other machine -will check-)
sources.list is shorter

If it can help, output of 'dpkg -s apt' is in attach.
