I'd have it documented as a wishlist if it were not for the other
item... Is there any reason why synomims should not work?

I don't quite understand why modifying sources.list would have any
impact on that... You only use 'stable' even when sources.list says
'potato' anyways (though my preference would be that either would be
recognized).
