Subject: dselect zaps apt sources.list
Mime-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

Package: dpkg
Version: 1.6.7 (potato i386 boot-floppies 2.2.4)
Severity: Important
X-Debbugs-CC: debian-boot@lists.debian.org, 54646@bugs.debian.org

If you run dselect, select apt as your acquisition source, and then respond
yes to the question "do you wish to edit the sources" the sources.list is
replaced by the entries you make. That is, your existing sources, along
with any comments, are eliminated. I saw this during initial install of
potato, and saw it again running dselect after install and after an update
from the archives (a few days ago).

I assumed from the messages that entries I made in dselect would be added
to the sources.

If the current behavior is intended it should be made crystal clear what
will happen if you say "yes" to update sources. And at least the orienting
comments (as found in the original sources.list) should be put in the file.

But I think the behavior is not intended, and is pretty dangerous! So, if
necessary, I suggest revising the intentions.

I suspect this is the same bug reported first in 54646, though that was
directed at base-config and is marked as "done," I think because it was
combined with other bugs. So I'm filing this report separately.

I mentioned this problem on debian-boot a few days ago, but this is the
first formal bug I have filed on it.

I would rate the severity higher except that first-time users are not
likely to respond "y" to editing the sources.list.
