This sounds remarkably like the GNOME Signal problem. One of the gnome
programs does not properly set SIGPIPE which causes dpkg to fail all the
time in exactly the manner you describe. It is fixed in newer gnome
packages. By removing the gnome stuff you probably also managed to get
a console that didn't have this problem.
