Package: apt
Version: 0.3.15
Severity: wishlist

I would like to be able to do

apt hold package-name

to put a package on hold. Right now, the only way to do it is through
deselect or editing /var/lib/dpkg/status by hand.

It is extremely unlikely that APT will *ever* directly write the status
file, it is not something I want to deal with.

You can use a script like this to get what you want.

#!/bin/sh
echo $1 hold | dpkg --set selections
