Bug#45901: problems encountered using capt

Package: apt
Version: 0.3.13

[1] I had a problem installing, using capt, and the error message dialog
was truncated and I couldn't read it all...

[2] Running apt-get install abiword manually from the command line
indicated that I ought to run apt-get -f install, as follows:
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies:
abiword: Conflicts: abi-fonts but 19990316-1 is installed
  perl-5.005: Depends: perl-5.005-base (= 5.005.03-4) but 5.005.03-3 is installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

[3] Running apt-get -f install didn't work:
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Correcting dependencies... Done
The following extra packages will be installed:
  perl-5.005-base
1 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 504 not upgraded.
80 packages not fully installed or removed.
Need to get 0B/412kB of archives. After unpacking 90.1kB will be freed.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]
E: Internal Error, Couldn't configure a pre-depend

[4] dpkg --configure --pending (huge session omitted) seemed to clear
up the situation enough that apt-get -f install (huge session omitted)
could run enough to get me to this point:
E: Sub-process returned an error code (1)
$ sudo apt-get -f install
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 504 not upgraded.
2 packages not fully installed or removed.
Need to get 0B of archives. After unpacking 0B will be used.
Setting up gnushogi (1.2p03-8) ...
Update-menus[17017]: further output (if any) will appear in /tmp/update-menus.17017
rmdir: unrecognized option `--ignore-fail-on-non-empty'
Try `rmdir --help' for more information.
dpkg: error processing gnushogi (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of xshogi:
 xshogi depends on gnushogi; however:
Package gnushogi is not configured yet.
dpkg: error processing xshogi (--configure):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Errors were encountered while processing:
 gnushogi
 xshogi
E: Sub-process returned an error code (1)

[5] purging the two shogi packages cleaned things up enough that apt-get -f
install had nothing more to do.

                             * * * * *

I think that the message (and lack of information) at [3] indicate a
bug in apt. Also, I think the lack of information from capt is also
a problem. If there's some kind of apt log you want back to you, let
me know.
