Bug#46436: [wishlist] apt -- moving average

Package: apt
Version: 0.3.13
Severity: Wishlist

I think the unstable distribution would be more useful if there was a way to
get only files in unstable older than a configurable number of days. This
line of thinking it motivated by the recent "lilo" problems in unstable. A
problem as fundamental as a broken lilo will show itself very quickly to the
people that continue to run the "get the newest version the day it is
released". Therefore, only semi-stable packages will remain in unstable for
any length of time.

I think if apt were to offer to check how long packages have been on the
servers and upgrade only those that are older than x number of days. Perhaps
to get around "this update is CRITICAL and all machines need it ASAP"
situations, a new line in the control file could be made that supercedes the
x-number-of-days-old technique, probably with another switch to apt that
doesn't honor that line.

I just thought that if there were more assurance of stability in unstable,
more people might be willing to run it. This is a way to offer more
stability to those that want it, and those that like living on the bleeding
edge can stick with the "update brand-new packages" that we have now.

Thanks. :)
