Hi William,
reaching out on the list is a good way, we can also be found on #debian-xfce
on Libera chat.
We don't really have a beginners guide, and the best would be to do stuff that
you find fun/rewarding. On more *needed* stuff, something not always fun but
really useful: check the Debian BTS to for old bugs and maybe check if they're
still reproducible, check on upstream trackers to see if it's already reported
etc. And maybe dig patches and submit them as PR on the various repositories.
