   * What led up to the situation?
Don't know. Just began to notice reverse sort.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?
Tried to adjust sort in settings. No adjustment possible, except "Sort dirs
before files", which had no effect.

Also checked /etc/default/locale, which is as pasted in:
LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE=C

   * What was the outcome of this action?
No effect.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?
Sort dirs before files, in ascending order. This used to be the default.
