I saw several similar bug reports, but none exactly the same.
Please let me know if more info' would help.
* What led up to the situation?
Fresh install Debian 10.1, upgrade to testing, upgrade to unstable.
No non free drivers were installed.
I believe it was working OK under buster and testing, but broke with unstable.
* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
ineffective)?
Sometimes (usually after hours of inactivity) screen display is dark except mouse pointer only,
after logging into desktop.
Workaround: Alt-Ctrl-Fx to TTY, login and kill lightdm process, restarts display
* What was the outcome of this action?
Fresh desktop available, but previously running user processes (terminal scripts, browsers, etc) are gone/dead.
* What outcome did you expect instead?
Login to screensaver; see previous desktop displayed and working.
