Dear Maintainer,

I am experiencing this problem as well. It started after I logged out and
rebooted the system for the first time in many weeks (I'm not sure exactly
how long). During that time many packages were installed / removed / upgraded,
though I am not sure if any of them are relevant to the problem.

Specifics:

  The following no longer display in the notification area, though they did
  before the reboot:

     vlc 3.0.2-0+deb
     remmina 1.2.30.1+dfsg-1~bpo9+1  

  The following all continue to work fine with the notification area:

     network-manager-gnome (nm-applet) 1.4.4-1
     xfce4-clipman 2:1.4.1-1
     hamster-applet 2.91.3+git2
     alltray 0.71b-1+b2

Worthy of note, vlc is QT based and remmina is GTK based, so it appears the
framework used may not matter.

I have tried rebooting, reinstalling recently deleted packages, deleting
recently installed packages, so far, nothing I can think of works. I didn't
bother with some of the things that had been tried above.

etckeeper is installed, and in reviewing the git log of package changes, I
didn't see any obvious issues, though perhaps someone with a better knowledge
of the notification area code might see something (a relevant library?), but
the section of the log that might apply (after stripping extraneous commits)
is about 800 lines long.
