The -c option of metacity activates the composer. The trick is that
there is no such option in the manpage but that's not really what we're
about here.

Then once the composer is enabled, I get the problem back, along with a
lot of shadows when two or more windows overlap. I join a screenshot,
which shows the overlapping problem with two Iceweasel windows, and we
can see that the "Refresh" button is clickable though there is a
terminal displayed over it.
