Further research has revealed that xserver-xorg-video-intel may be the
culprit. Very similar symptoms have been reported on
http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/14594 for xf86-video-intel. Also, there are
lots of reports on locked, crashed or frozen X servers with the intel
driver in the Debian BTS.
My Lifebook has an Intel GMA950. Xorg.0.log doesn't show anything alarming.
