I ran apt-get update, dist-upgrade, auto-remove on a new install a few
times as i got software installed and removed (like a bunch of x-video
drivers), so i might've kinda done that... Although i don't think
autoremove would do that.

Yup, sorry. 32bit, kernel 2.6.29-1-686. Do you need dpkg -l |grep xf
or any other output?
