With xfce4-battery-plugin version 0.5.0-6, the output looks somewhat
plausible: with my main battery at 100% and the travel battery at 94%,
the battery plugin reads 96%. I'm guessing this is the expected
behaviour. The only small glitch I see is that when the travel
battery is removed the percentage full doesn't change for a few
minutes.
