Just for the records: I also tried to help upstream to solve this nasty
bug[1]. Progress is somewhat slow, and the last conclusion that I'm
aware of is that this bug is hidden in the menu code. This also
explaines why I also had similar memory leak problems with the menu
panel plugin.
