Just so you know this is addressed by default in the 4.3.90.1 release
(4.4beta1) which does tests at runtime to see if your system is fast
enough to do compositing and turns it on if so or can be forced on with
a command line switch.

Have you tried these packages?  They should be properly in unstable in a
day or so.
