Bug#1016781: xfonts-75dpi: DEC terminal fonts do not load

Dear Maintainer,

I wanted to use after a longer hiatus the very old DEC terminal X11 core fonts,
eg. 

term14.pcf.gz -dec-terminal-medium-r-normal--14-140-75-75-c-80-iso8859-1

The font files are in the right directory /usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi,
they are listed in a fonts.dir in that directory (above two lines are
from that file), but xlsfonts does not list them, xfontsel does not show 
them (unlike the similarly old schumacher fonts), and xterm shows

Is this a bug in my setup, or a bug in the font, or in some X11 library?
If I open the font in "fontforge", everything seems normal to me (I see
a bitmap font that looks right to me).

Of course this borders on software archeology, but I do like this font,
and would love to use it.
