Where is the X keyboard configuration magic?

Hi,

we just installed a bullseye system “barebones” and then
added the GUI by “apt-get install xorg icewm xterm”, etc.
and use “exec startx” to run it.

For some reason, the keyboard layout from the installer
is only preserved on the virtual terminal, not in X11.
I know there’s some magic supposed to do that, and
/etc/default/keyboard is also correct. console-setup, kbd,
keyboard-configuration and xkb-data are installed.

Adding setkbmap to ~/.xsessionrc obviously “fixes” this,
but I’m curious why it didn’t work by default, and what
parts should normally come together to make it do that.

Please do Cc me in replies, as I’m not subscribed to the list.

Thanks in advance,
