Bug#964561: libx11-6: [xcb] Extra reply data still left in queue

Package: libx11-6
Version: 2:1.6.9-2+b1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?

xfce4-panel crashed. sometime later firefox crashed. The message in both cases was similar:

[xcb] Extra reply data still left in queue
[xcb] This is most likely caused by a broken X extension library
    [xcb] Aborting, sorry about that.
    xfce4-panel: ../../src/xcb_io.c:580: _XReply: Assertion `!xcb_xlib_extra_reply_data_left' failed.

firefox: ../../src/xcb_io.c:580: _XReply: Assertion `!xcb_xlib_extra_reply_data_left' failed.

Now firefox and firefox-esr crash immediately on launch.
I did manage to restart xfce4-panel successfully.

I have not tried restarting my X session, as I have long-running jobs running.
I did try updating to the latest (apt upgrade), but no change in symptoms.

Reporting against libx11 as that is where the xcb_io.c source file is located.
