Package: xterm Version: 327-2 Severity: normal --- Please enter the report below this line. --- When using core X fonts (from the X server), Xterm attempts to infer the oblique (-o-) version from the regular font in order to render italicized text. Not all fonts, however, have the oblique versions, providing italic ones (-i-) instead. At run time, this results in the following message displayed to stderr: > xterm: cannot load font '-monotype-courier > new-medium-o-*-*-17-120-100-100-m-100-koi8-r' > xterm: cannot load font '-monotype-courier > new-medium-o-*-*-17-120-100-100-m-100-koi8-r' > xterm: cannot load font '-monotype-courier > new-medium-o-*-*-17-120-100-100-m-100-koi8-r' > xterm: cannot load font '-monotype-courier > new-medium-o-*-*-17-120-100-100-m-100-koi8-r' When looking for the italic font, Xterm should attempt both alternatives, in order. Alternatively, it would make sense to have X resource(s) available, allowing to explicitly specify italic version(s) for font1 through font6. --- System information. --- Architecture: Kernel: Linux 4.9.0-8-amd64 Debian Release: 9.3 500 xenial package.perforce.com 500 trusty package.perforce.com 500 stable-updates ftp.ru.debian.org 500 stable security.debian.org 500 stable ftp.ru.debian.org 500 precise package.perforce.com 500 oldstable-updates ftp.ru.debian.org 500 oldstable security.debian.org 500 oldstable ftp.ru.debian.org 500 oldoldstable-updates ftp.ru.debian.org 500 oldoldstable security.debian.org 500 oldoldstable ftp.ru.debian.org 500 bionic ppa.launchpad.net 100 stretch-backports ftp.ru.debian.org --- Package information. --- Depends (Version) | Installed ===============================-+-============= xbitmaps | 1.1.1-2 libc6 (>= 2.15) | libfontconfig1 (>= 2.11) | libice6 (>= 1:1.0.0) | libtinfo5 (>= 6) | libutempter0 (>= 1.1.5) | libx11-6 | libxaw7 | libxft2 (>> 2.1.1) | libxinerama1 | libxmu6 | libxpm4 | libxt6 | Recommends (Version) | Installed =========================-+-=========== x11-utils | 7.7+3+b1 Suggests (Version) | Installed ==============================-+-=========== xfonts-cyrillic | 1:1.0.4Attachment: signature.asc

Starting with version 330, xterm does just that. Quoting the changelog[1]: ,---- | modify the font-lookup for italics to allow for “-i-” if no match is | found with slant “-o-” (prompted by patch by Ben Wong). `---- Cheers, Sven 1. https://invisible-island.net/xterm/xterm.log.html#xterm_330
