When using core X fonts (from the X server), Xterm attempts to infer the
oblique (-o-) version from the regular font in order to render
italicized text.

Not all fonts, however, have the oblique versions, providing italic ones
(-i-) instead. At run time, this results in the following message
displayed to stderr:

> xterm: cannot load font '-monotype-courier
> new-medium-o-*-*-17-120-100-100-m-100-koi8-r'
> xterm: cannot load font '-monotype-courier
> new-medium-o-*-*-17-120-100-100-m-100-koi8-r'
> xterm: cannot load font '-monotype-courier
> new-medium-o-*-*-17-120-100-100-m-100-koi8-r'
> xterm: cannot load font '-monotype-courier
> new-medium-o-*-*-17-120-100-100-m-100-koi8-r'

When looking for the italic font, Xterm should attempt both
alternatives, in order.

Alternatively, it would make sense to have X resource(s) available,
allowing to explicitly specify italic version(s) for font1 through font6.

Starting with version 330, xterm does just that. Quoting the
changelog[1]:

,----
| modify the font-lookup for italics to allow for “-i-” if no match is
| found with slant “-o-” (prompted by patch by Ben Wong).
`----

Cheers,
