I have been waiting since filing this for questions or comments. I don't understand why you are saying

This appears to crash only on self-compiled software not in Debian. No response from submitter since October 2018
I did not 'respond' because there have been no messages to me that required a response.

I think you're missing the point about the 'self-compiled' software.  The whole system shouldn't crash or hang from one misbehaving program (and surf doesn't 'misbehave' on other distros).  This problem did not happen on other non-Debian-based distros, so it shows that there's something not quite right with Debian's drive or kernel patches.
