Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.99.917+git20161206-1

I've been using xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.99.917+git20160218-1 for quite
a while on a thinkpad P70 (skylake) without problems.

I've recently upgraded to xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.99.917+git20161206-1
and after doing this, the intel driver would not load when I started X
anymore -logverbose 9 didn't show anything outside of the fact that the
driver was not loading.
Reverting to 2:2.99.917+git20160218-1 (and downgrading to
xserver-common_2%3a1.18.1-1_all.deb xserver-xorg-core_2%3a1.18.1-1_amd64.deb
due to ABI compatibility) fixes the problem.

X worked fine with the old driver and output:

Any idea what's going on?

For now, I had to go back:
saruman:/var/cache/apt/archives# dpkg -i xserver-xorg-video-intel_2%3a2.99.917+git20160218-1_amd64.deb xserver-xorg-video-intel-dbg_2%3a2.99.917+git20160218-1_amd64.deb xserver-common_2%3a1.18.1-1_all.deb xserver-xorg-core_2%3a1.18.1-1_amd64.deb xserver-xorg-input-evdev_1%3a2.10.1-1+b1_amd64.deb xserver-xorg-input-mouse_1%3a1.9.1-1+b1_amd64.deb

Thanks,
Marc

See the xserver-xorg-core NEWS.Debian:

,----
| xorg-server (2:1.18.3-2) unstable; urgency=medium
|
| X now defaults to using built-in modesetting video driver on Intel
| hardware which is "4th gen GMA" and newer, so roughly speaking on hardware
| from 2007 and up. If this triggers new bugs on your hw, please file them
| against the xserver.
|
| Continuing to use the -intel driver is possible by dropping the template
| xorg.conf to /etc/X11:
|
| # cp /usr/share/doc/xserver-xorg-video-intel/xorg.conf /etc/X11
|
| -- Timo Aaltonen <tjaalton@debian.org> Tue, 19 Jul 2016 04:28:05 +0300
`----

The rationale for this change is that Intel has stopped making releases
of their video driver.

Cheers,
       Sven
