That sounds like it could be bug #846779, an xserver-xorg-core
regression. Enabling
Option "AccelMethod" "glamor"
Option "DRI" "3"
in /etc/X11/xorg.conf should avoid it.
However, that doesn't explain the GPU hangs or the Xorg restart
problems, so we might be up to at least three separate issues.
