Bug#828708: xserver-xorg: incorrect keycodes sent by X after upgrade

Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.7+15
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I use Debian sid/unstable on an ASUS UX301LA laptop, my main environment is
SLIM + XFCE + AWESOME, and I use the French bépo (dvorak-like) alternative
mapping (pc105, fr, bepo).
After a recent dist-upgrade some non-character keys have been mixed (e.g.
pagedown is now mapped to menu, altgr is now mapped to return, ...).

Since the problem had not appeared until recently, I believe it was caused by a
dist-upgrade I ran on the 21st (the previous ones were on the 8th and 19th, and
contained no Xorg-related packages).
Here is are the X-related upgrades that took place (according to etckeeper):
    -xserver-xorg-input-all 1:7.7+14 amd64
    +xserver-xorg-input-all 1:7.7+15 amd64
    +xserver-xorg-input-libinput 0.19.0-1 amd64
    -xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:1.0.12-1+b1 amd64
    +xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:1.0.12-2 amd64

I have tried using the mixed keys on both my display manager (slim) and a blank
user's startx (default XFCE session), and the problem was present.
The problem being present even outside of my personal session's settings
suggests it is not caused by my settings/environment.

I have tried using an external keyboard and using the mixed keys on it, and the
problem was present.
The problem being present even on an external keyboard suggests it is not input
device specific.

Here is the output from 'sudo evtest' on my laptop's keyboard, while inputting
LEFTMETA, ALTGR, and PAGEDOWN:

These two outputs seem to confirm that my inputs are OK on the kernel side and
get remapped inside Xorg into these unexpected values -- at least unexpected
for me :-)

I have then run 'setxkbmap -print -verbose 10' out of curiosity:

Setting verbose level to 10
locale is C
Trying to load rules file ./rules/xorg...
Trying to load rules file /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/xorg...
Success.
Applied rules from xorg:
rules:      xorg
model:      pc105
layout:     fr
variant:    bepo
Trying to build keymap using the following components:
keycodes:   xfree86+aliases(azerty)
types:      complete
compat:     complete
symbols:    pc+fr(bepo)+inet(pc105)
geometry:   pc(pc105)
xkb_keymap {
        xkb_keycodes  { include "xfree86+aliases(azerty)"       };
        xkb_types     { include "complete"      };
        xkb_compat    { include "complete"      };
        xkb_symbols   { include "pc+fr(bepo)+inet(pc105)"       };
        xkb_geometry  { include "pc(pc105)"     };
};

It seemed weird to me that the xfree86 keycodes are used, I thus ran "setxkbmap
fr bepo -keycodes 'evdev+aliases(azerty)'" to see whether that would change
anything.
And it did fix the problem.

The one thing I do not understand is why would it switch back to xfree86 by
itself?
I did not notice changes that could have done that in the packages I mentioned
(though I could have missed them).

Thank you for reading me,
Dan
