Bug#787233: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau: (EE) [drm] KMS not enabled

Package: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
Version: 1:1.0.11-1+b1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Thanks for maintaining Debian's nouveau driver.

It's great to have an open alternative.

The main reason I'm writing is that a recent

    $ aptitude full-upgrade

and reboot, failed to run X.

xorg's log file said something like

    (EE) [drm] KMS not enabled

My understanding is that KMS is an acronym for
kernel mode switching, which is now code in the
kernel for quickly switching between console and
graphical video modes.

Evidently X didn't think my kernel supported KMS.

However

    I was using 3.0

and

    https://wiki.debian.org/KernelModesetting says
it has been supported since kernel image
    version 2.6.29.

Upgrading my kernel to 4.0 fixed it.

It seems to me that the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
package might be improved by making it depend on
version 4.0 or later of a kernel package.

For what it's worth, a kernel maintainer (Ben
Hutchings) wrote on the OFTC network's IRC channel
#debian-kernel that there's no way to write a
dependency on a certain kernel version, it won't
do any good, on most architectures, there are
multiple kernel flavours and even if you listed
all the flavours as alternative dependencies, it
wouldn't be satisfied by *newer* upstream versions
or by custom kernel packages.

Maybe Ben is right, but if he is, I keep finding
myself asking: Can we really only rely on trial
and error to match application and kernel
versions?

I don't see why xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
couldn't at least depend on version 4.0 of the
linux kernel being installed with something like

    Depends: linux-image-686-pae (>= 4.0) | linux-image-amd64 (>= 4.0)

Maybe more architectures could be or-ed.

Thanks,
Kingsley
