Bug#774007: xserver-xorg-video-intel: Graphics acceleration breaks after playing a video in chromium

Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.99.917-1~exp1
Severity: serious

Dear Maintainer,

Trying to play an HTML5 video in Chromium causes the GPU to hang, and
hardware acceleration to become disabled. This appears to be reproducible
100% of the time on an amd64 Thinkpad X61s but never reproducible on an
i386 Thinkpad X60s. I've tested with both the xserver-xorg-video-intel
package in testing, as well as the package in experimental. Both appear
to have the same problem.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Boot Debian
2. Log on / start X11
3. Start glxgears
4. Start chromium
5. Play any HTML5 video (example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNGzTg53zDY)
6. Note that glxgears has crashed with

acf@vitellary:~$ glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
252 frames in 5.0 seconds = 50.235 FPS
248 frames in 5.0 seconds = 49.492 FPS
intel_do_flush_locked failed: Input/output error
acf@vitellary:~$

7. Note the line

[ 62.805] (EE) intel(0): Detected a hung GPU, disabling acceleration.

has appeared in /var/log/Xorg.0.log

8. Note that programs using OpenGL now crash on startup until the system
   is rebooted.

I've set the severity level to "serious" here, because assuming others
experience this problem, it severely impairs the usability of the package,
so I think it should be release-critical. I think you would agree that
trying to watch a video in chromium causing OpenGL to break until the
system is rebooted is a major problem, and should be fixed for the
jessie release. Of course, you're welcome to change this.

Also, of course, I'd be happy to provide any more information or testing
that is necessary.

Thanks,
Alan
