Correct, this chipset has been supported for a long time.

That is red herring.

Probably that's #740953 which is mostly seen on Macs. AFAIK no solution
has been found yet, but if you are willing to build your own kernel,
unsetting CONFIG_X86_SYSFB reportedly helps.
