   * What led up to the situation?

I have installed compiz after xfce4.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)?

Ran the ccsm program

   * What was the outcome of this action?

No icons!

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

Icons! :)
