Package: xserver-xorg-video-sis
Version: 1:0.9.3-6
Severity: normal

The D201GLY onboard SiS662 VGA shares memory with the host CPU.
The snow appears to be related to memory bandwidth (it gets worse at
higher resolutions / refresh rates / bits per pixel, and when running
memory-intensive applications, even if not graphics-intensive at all -
such as GCC). Both Debian 0.9.3-6 and the sis_drv.so built from the
latest upstream source (xf86-video-sis-0.10.0) are affected by this bug,
and so is the sisfb driver even in the latest kernel (tested 2.6.25).
However, VESA fbdev (mode set on kernel command line), as well as the
patched Premium driver (now freely available) are not affected. The
xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log below are actually from my working setup.

Premium driver, now free: http://www.winischhofer.eu/linuxsispart4.shtml
Patches needed for current x.org: http://cs.haifa.ac.il/~skiselev/
I've just unpacked the sisp.tar.gz source, applied the two patches, run
../configure --prefix=/usr && make
and copied the newly built src/.libs/sis_drv.so overwriting the
Debian-shipped /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/sis_drv.so .

Unfortunately, the premium driver is old (shows its version as 0.9.1)
and seems to have compatibility issues with the latest x.org - the
disable_internal_ddc.patch was needed to work around a segfault when
it's about to dump EDID in hex (but applying this patch disables monitor
autodetection, so it needs to be set up properly in xorg.conf, otherwise
X will crash on startup).

While the Premium driver is not quite ready to include in Debian as is,
I hope this report will help the upstream developers fix the bug.
