My iMac G3 specs:
        *Model:  M5521
        *600MHz PowerPC G3
        *ATI Rage 128 Ultra - 16MB AGP 2x
        *1 GB RAM
        *DVD Drive (exact model detailed below)

The problem:

Attempting to load any DVD movie into any DVD-capable media player results in
very choppy video and audio playback and a very sluggish system until the
program is either terminated or until the user clicks the stop button and waits
for the DVD playback to stop.  Strictly for a base comparison, DVD movies
played smoothly under Mac OSX, but struggle under Debian (and Ubuntu) on the
same hardware.

Things I've tried to remedy this:

        -I successfully compiled VLC player to run on the PowerPC G3 (without
"Altivec" instructions/optimizations).  While DVD movies were able to play, the
audio and video playback were very choppy, regardless of any combination of
codec settings I've tried.

        -I then tried Gxine, which yielded a slightly smoother performance in
playback, but the entire system became very sluggish and almost unresponsive
while the DVD was playing; simple things like dragging windows, clicking menus,
and even using a second Terminal window.  The system became responsive again,
after I clicked the stop button in Gxine and waited for the DVD playback to
stop.

        -Booting Debian Wheezy without an xorg.conf file always fails, so
instead, I boot with the xorg.conf file detailed below.  Note that I have
"ForcePCIMode" enabled.  If I were to set that to false (implying AGP mode),
the system freezes, even at the system login screen (GDM).  This makes me
wonder if I'm getting the full AGP 2x speed out of my hardware, even with
"ForcePCIMode" enabled, or if I am just getting the unaccelerated PCI bus
speed.  I also wonder if this is the main reason why DVD playback is so slow.


Other noteworthy references:

        -When I examined the '/System/Library/Extensions' path in Mac OS X, I
noticed that there were actually some additional files/drivers apart from the
R128 driver that seemed to work in conjunction with the Rage128 driver to
provide accelerated DVD performance.  I could only speculate this by their
filenames.  I made a short post of it on the MintPPC forums
(http://www.mintppc.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=8147#p8147).  Perhaps the
current xserver-xorg-video-r128 driver has no provisions for DVD acceleration?

        -I am currently using the most up-to-date versions of the following
DVD-related components, as provided on the default Debian repository and the
MintPPC repository:

of graphics acceleration.
