Seems to be the same problem as #595447, see also
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=50403.

Try disabling acceleration (e.g. boot with nouveau.noaccel=1), it will
be very slow but should at least support the 1900x1200 resolution on the
external display, something you probably won't get with the vesa driver.
