Ah, thank you very much for that. I have attached to this message the
output from reportbug --template containing all of the relevant
configuration information that I left out before.

I should also add an update to that bug report:

After submitting that report, I forgot to disable xscreensaver as I
said I would. Later, I left the netbook running for awhile. When I
returned, the screen was blank and would not respond to keys or the
touchpad. Apparently, xscreensaver had started a GL hack and this had
killed GL in X.

Switching to a console worked and when I switched back I was presented
with a full screen message box that said something to the effect of X
or GL was no longer working or responding properly. It also said that
all gnome-shell extensions would be disabled and gave me a single
logout button to click on.

When I logged back in, GL capabilities were entirely gone and
gnome-fallback launched instead. The kernel log contained the
following drm errors:

[drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung
[drm] capturing error event; look for more information in
/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state
[drm:i915_wait_request] *ERROR* i915_wait_request returns -11
(awaiting 1379161 at 1379160, next 1379162)
[drm:i915_reset] *ERROR* Failed to reset chip.

I then rebooted the machine and it returned to normal operation.
