Bug#668828: Appears virtual desktop stays large regardless of efforts to limit.

Thank you for the clarification. I was basing my speculation regarding the meaning of "maximum 4096 x4096" on section II.5 of the linked wiki which may be dated, incorrect, or more likely--I misinterpreted it.

That's normal, it would be up to the window manager to prevent this.

No. With KMS, video memory is dynamically reallocated for the actual
current screen size, 1280x1024 in this case. That's why the hardware
limits can always be advertised for the maximum size.
