configure.ac:41: error: xorg-macros version 1.8 or higher is required but 1.4.2 found
xutils-dev_7.5+4 seems to be enough.

Considering it’s in stable, and I’m now past it, and probably
not many others would run into it (they’d probably choose to
build X first insted of make-do with a partially actualised
OS), I’m closing it now.
