Good call! I started looking for old configuration files, and it turns
out I had a really ancient ~/.Xmodmap file, containing the two lines:
keycode 64 = Meta_L
keycode 0x6D = Multi_key
When I removed the ~/.Xmodmap file, and logged out and back in, the
Alt-Tab and Alt-F2 shortcuts started working.
I verified that Alt worked as Meta on Emacs, and that composing
multi-charpress characters (eg. ä) worked.
The home directory version control of this file doesn't go further back
than 2004, helpfully saying "Initial checkin". But I suspect it go all
the way back to my Solaris days of the late 90-ies.
Thanks!
