Not installing the desktop files will raise other issues, c.f.

well perhaps there are 3 categories of users:
a) people who intentionally use xterm (and don't mind the menus)
b) people who more/less accidentally run xterm
c) other (probably not gnome developers)
Are you addressing (b)?
