There is already an entry in upstream's BTS:

Its open and unanswered since February 2010. (Sorry, I should
have included this link right from the start.)

There was also some discussion about this, e.g.:

As soon as it comes to Nvidia's closed source code it either
comes to politics and idelogies, or people switch off. Highly
frustrating. There is no progress.

I really like Ubuntu's pragmatic approach on this.
